Scalp psoriasis causes reddish plaque and dandruff-like flaking on the scalp. Various treatment options are available to control scalp psoriasis and its symptoms. Read on to get more information about  treatment for scalp psoriasis.

know the symptoms of psoriasisScalp psoriasis is a skin disorder that can cause red, thick, itchy patches on the scalp. About 50% of patients with psoriasis may develop scalp psoriasis. Psoriasis is a chronic disorder, caused by chronic inflammation of the skin. Scalp psoriasis may occur with other forms of psoriasis. It mainly affects the back of the head; however, it can affect multiple distinct areas of the scalp or entire scalp. Scalp psoriasis may be mild causing only light scaling, or it may be severe causing crusted, thick scales all over the scalp. The symptoms of scalp psoriasis are visible, silvery-white scales, reddish plaque on the scalp and dandruff-like flaking. These thick scales and redness may also spread on the neck, forehead and behind the ears. There may be severe itching, soreness of the scalp, tender scalp, pain and a feeling of tightness.

In some severe cases of scalp psoriasis, there may be temporary hair loss. However, hair usually grows again after psoriasis is cured. In some cases, there may be a possibility of infections due to scratching and rubbing. Scalp psoriasis may cause involvement of gluteal fold of buttocks. Weakened immune system, hormonal changes and stress are some of the risk factors for scalp psoriasis. Flaking and constant itching can make the person feel very embarrassed. There are various treatment options for scalp psoriasis. Let’s take a look into the details about treatment for scalp psoriasis.

How to Treat Scalp Psoriasis

A number of treatment options can help in controlling the symptoms of scalp psoriasis. The treatment is aimed at relieving the signs and symptoms and controlling flare-ups. It includes the use of topical medications, medicated shampoos and phototherapy.

Topical therapy for scalp psoriasis includes corticosteroids, tazarotene, anthralin, calcipotriol/calcipotriene and tars. Topical medications are available in the form of creams, lotions, ointments, gels, foams and shampoos. These medications can be applied once or twice daily for several weeks or months. They can be applied for at least 15 minutes or left for several hours on the scalp.

Corticosteroids such as betamethasone, clobetasol, fluocinolone acetonide or hydrocortisone are most commonly used for the treatment of scalp psoriasis. They come in the form of lotions, creams, foams and shampoos, which can be used safely for a prolonged period.

scalp psoriasis treatmentIf  is mild, involving a few areas, then intralesional steroid injections in the scalp areas are recommended.

Anthralin is also another effective medication for scalp psoriasis. Apply 0.25% or 0.5% anthralin on the scalp and leave it for about 30 minutes. Then wash it off. Calcipotriol/calcipotriene, a derivative of vitamin D, is also effective and safe medication that can be used for long term. Topical tazarotene is a retinoid resembling the properties of vitamin A. Apply a thin layer of the gel form of tazarotene to the scalp patches and leave it overnight. This medication should be avoided during pregnancy.

Salicylic acid is an active ingredient used in several topical scalp psoriasis ointments. It can help to loosen the scales and relieve itching. However, this treatment is useful in mild scalp psoriasis. Another effective treatment is coconut compound ointment. It consists of a combination of salicylic acid, coal tar and sulfur. This ointment is rubbed over affected areas and left overnight. It is washed off with a medicated shampoo in the morning.

Some medicated shampoos are quite effective for treating scalp psoriasis. Coal tar shampoos are found to be useful for most patients. These shampoos consist of various active ingredients, which can help to relieve itching and remove scaling from the scalp. To achieve good results, rub the shampoo into the scalp and leave it for about 5-10 minutes. Then rinse off with warm water. Warm water helps to loosen and remove the scales easily. After shampooing, apply cortisone lotion to the scalp. Regularly comb your hair in order to remove any scaling.

If the scalp is infected by bacteria or fungus, then it can worsen your scalp psoriasis. This can be treated with antimicrobial prescription or antifungal shampoos. The latter can be used once or twice in a week.

psoriasis light treatment

Use of ultraviolet light is another effective treatment option. To achieve better results with UV light, you should cut your hair short or shave your head, so that UV light can reach to the scalp. The treatment involves the administration of a high intensity UV light with the help of a hand-held device called UV comb. This can help to remove plaques and repair the skin. Natural sunlight is also a good source of UV light and can be used to treat scalp psoriasis.

  Scalp Psoriasis – Home Remedies

Natural treatment for scalp psoriasis constitutes a combination of herbs and essential oils. Regularly rinse your scalp with a product that contains sea salts. You can use the shampoo that contains sea salts or mix sea salts in your regular shampoo. Regularly massage your hair and scalp with a mixture of jojoba oil and aloe vera. Scalp massage of chamomile tea oil or olive oil offers soothing effect. The use of eucalyptus oil, lavender oil or neem oil is also beneficial. Neem oil helps to stop itching, while lavender oil is a soothing agent. These oils can also stimulate hair growth. Application of a conditioning mask made from olive oil, honey and avocado can also be helpful to reduce the symptoms. Use natural shampoos that contain jojoba or wheat germ oil. These shampoos can help to maintain moisture and keep the scalp healthy.

Besides these treatment options, regular exercises such as swimming, cycling and tai chi, nutritious diet and use of relaxation techniques will help to relieve stress and improve health, and contribute a lot in treating scalp psoriasis.

Silky, shiny hair is a sign of good health. But everybody is not blessed with healthy hair. Every person has a different hair type such as normal, oily or dry. Very few people have normal hair type. Oily hair tend to become sticky quickly. Dry hair can be identified by their rough and dull appearance. They look lifeless with frizziness and split ends. They are difficult to brush or comb. They are susceptible to damage, tangles and breakage.

Causes of Dry Hair

When the cuticle becomes highly weathered and porous, the cortex is not able to retain water. It makes the hair dry and rough. Some common causes of dry hair are environmental damage due to heat, sun rays and outside chemicals, chemical damage due to bleach, color or perms and mechanical damage by curling irons, blow-drying or hot rollers. Overuse of heat-styling equipments, harsh weather conditions, excessive use of shampoos and conditioners containing harsh chemicals and misuse of perms or color are also responsible for making the hair dry. Besides this, some people are born with dry hair. Each factor reduces the moisture content of hair, due to which hair loses its bounce, elasticity and suppleness. Dryness may also result from sebum deficiency on the hair surface because of absence or decrease in sebaceous gland secretions. Dry hair can be a symptom of certain metabolic disorders such as Menkes kinky hair syndrome and hypothyroidism.

Generally, these products contain proteins, which strengthen the hair. Low pH shampoos are excellent for the hair, as they don’t make the cuticles to lift.
  • Heat is very harmful for dry hair. If you have to spend a lot of time in sunlight, then use a good hair sunscreen. While going outdoor or traveling, protect your hair with a hat or headscarf. Dry your hair naturally whenever possible. Avoid using blow-dryer or hair dryer as much as possible.
  • Avoid use of shampoo for every washing. Instead, rinse them with water only. Don’t use mousse, but use a thickening lotion.
  • Brush your hair frequently using a bristle brush, so that the natural oil spreads in the hair shafts.
  • You can apply a spray-on shine-conditioning product for a short-term use. It offers instant sheen and a healthy-looking appearance.
  • Chemical treatments such as coloring, perming or relaxing make the hair dry and rough. Hence, try to avoid these treatments on your hair.

Learn important and little know benefits from olive oil.

Among the known benefits of olive oil are the following:

1. Olive oil helps control LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), which is the one that leads to heart disease, at the same time it raises the good cholesterol or HDL levels.
2. Olive oil helps protect and is very well tolerated by the stomach. It has beneficial effects on ulcers and gastritis as well as helps lower the incidence of gallstones.
3. Extra virgin olive oil, in particular, contains very high levels of antioxidants, particularly vitamin E and phenols.
4. Olive oil is an excellent alternative for your skin.

Olive oil for your skin

Since ancient times, Mediterranean people have used olive oil to hydrate, regenerate and soften their skin, as well as strengthen and hydrate their hair and nails. Here are some great tips you can use too:

1.For brittle and dry nails and to soften the cuticles soak nails in a small cup of olive oil and lemon.
2.For softer and smoother hands and feet apply a generous amount of cold olive oil after your shower and cover with cotton gloves and socks. Also, apply extra oil wherever the skin feels rough or cracked.
3.To soothe and nourish your skin add to your bath some olive oil.
4.Use olive oil to relieve dry or chapped lips.
5.To repair split ends, make your hair shinier, silkier and more lustrous and even help  heal dandruff , massage some olive oil into your scalp and hair, then cover the hair with a plastic cap for at least 30 minutes and then shampoo as usual.

Varieties of olive oil

There are different varieties of olive oil, which have been divided by the amount of processing they go to.

Extra virgin olive oil

Extra virgin olive oil is the unrefined oil that comes from the first pressing of the olive, extracted without using heat or chemicals. It is considered the best as it is the least processed and contains the most nutrients. It also has the most delicate flavor.

Virgin olive oil comes from the second pressing of the olives, although it can also come from the first pressing too. The main difference is that virgin olive oil has a higher acidity level and less phytonutrients than extra virgin and a different flavor.

Pure olive oil or just "olive oil" goes through some processing, which might include filtering and refining. This refined oil can also be combined with a little extra virgin olive oil to add flavor.

Light or Extra light olive oil undergoes significant processing and at the end only retains a very mild olive flavor. Sometimes it is even blended with other vegetable oils.

When buying olive oil

(1) Select Extra Virgin olive oil over any other kind.
(2) See that it is bottled in dark tinted bottles, since it will help protect it from direct exposure to light which will promote oxidation.
(3) Make sure the oil is displayed in a cool area away from any contact with heat.

These seven healthy hair tips hopefully help refute the misconceptions and disprove the myths some associate with proper hair care.

tips for healthy hair

Our glorious hair. It’s shaved, layered, blow dried, permed, heated, straightened, frizzed, dreadlocked and colored. To take care of it we buy hair care products by the bag. On top of that the world is awash in healthy hair tips, myths and misconceptions.

Let’s discuss a few.

Myth #1: If you want shiny hair rinse with cold water.

Truth: Cold water rinsing doesn’t make hair shinier. Sure some may suggest this as one of the healthy hair tips. But as long as you avoid extremely hot water, which is damaging, to wash your hair, it really does not matter how cold the rinse water is.

Myth #2: It’s smart to change hair shampoo regularly.

hair healthy

Truth: This is makes me laugh. Your hair is unable to remember or recognize what shampoo was used on it last. It’s basically just dead cells. So how’s it gonna know what kind of shampoo you’re using? But your hair will respond to shampoos formulated to its specific hair type. So get the right shampoo for your hair type rather than worrying about which one to use next.

Myth #3: Shampoo twice if you want really clean hair.

Truth: Actually over use of shampoos can be damaging to your hair. Unless your hair is extremely oily shampooing once should suffice.

Myth #4: If you want your hair to grow faster get it trimmed more often.

how to grow hair faster

Truth: Everyone’s hair grows at its own rate. How fast it grows certainly is not dependent on how often you trim it. All trimming it does is to make your hair look neater as it gets rid of the split ends. Still many women trim their hair regularly because they believe hair grows faster that way.

Myth #5: Brushing your hair 100 times a day is wise.

Truth: This is a really famous myth that’s been repeated from mother to daughter for decades now. You will see it mentioned in hair care books too. Yet you never want to brush your hair except to style it. Over brushing like this tends to weaken and damage your hair.

Myth #6: A stress filled life leads directly to hair loss.

hairloss helpTruth be told we’re losing hair daily. Regardless of whether we are stressed out or not. On an average between 40 to 130 hairs fall out every day. Sure you might lose a few more if you’re super stressed. But unless you are pulling your hair out by the roots, it will grow back!

Myth #7: A good stylist can generally repair your split ends.

Truth: Cutting away the splits is the only treatment that works. Alas there is no way to repair a split end.

So there you have it. Seven healthy hair tips. Yours for the taking.
