If  hair loss  is affecting your life, your self confidence or self -esteem for instance what can you do to improve matters? You might well be advised not to merely sit back and think that hereditary traits are responsible and that there is nothing you can do, you can….

In our society often obsessed with the way we look,   losing your hair   can be hard to bear and have a very negative affect on self-confidence and self-esteem.

How can you tell if hair loss is negatively affecting your life?

hair loss in depressionHave you noticed a decrease in your self-esteem since noticing your hair loss?
Do you experience feelings of depression related to losing your hair?
Is your social life suffering as a result of hair loss?
Do you believe that others notice you only because of your loss of hair?
Do you feel unattractive?
Does your hair loss interfere with other areas of your life?

If you are answering yes to some or all of these questions then now might be the right time to be doing something about the problem.

Be aware however, that losing your hair doesn’t always mean you lose your attractiveness, your self-confidence, and social life.

What firstly is the cause and how can you yourself do something about it?

what causes split endsWell some of the chemicals we use these days when have our hair permed or coloured can cause damage that can amount to excessive hair loss. Look for early signs of split ends and fragile hair showing changes in texture, such problems can be easily ignored until escalating into longer term problems. It makes us feel good to spend money on the products that we feel will improve our appearance but unfortunately there is sometimes a down side as more often than not constant use of colourings, perms hair straightners can do more damage than good.

essential fatty acids, olive oil

Sometimes a bad diet can be the result of hair thinning, a lack of nutrients can make the hair become loosened and fall out much easier than would be the norm. Some nutrients such as essential fatty acids can play a role in improving our skin hair and nails. Essential fatty acids, omegas 3, 6 and 9 are not the fats that we are all warned against as unhealthy eating but those found in oily fish, salmon and mackerel for instance, seeds nuts and olive oil are all able to provide benefits for our hair, skin and nails. Good for healthy hearts too. All of us  lose our hair , it is a continual natural replacement cycle, hairs just like skin cells die off and are replaced by new growth. It is when this pattern becomes excessive that we start to become alarmed.

hair loss and diabetesThere are other causes and we can discuss more at another time but now I feel maybe rambling on just causes a loss of interest so until my next session…
Oh by the way….. you probably already know but there are products on the market you can buy to help you with this problem that can help clean up the scalp and hair follicles improve blood and oxygen supply and stimulate growth but more about that next time too.

These seven healthy hair tips hopefully help refute the misconceptions and disprove the myths some associate with proper hair care.

tips for healthy hair

Our glorious hair. It’s shaved, layered, blow dried, permed, heated, straightened, frizzed, dreadlocked and colored. To take care of it we buy hair care products by the bag. On top of that the world is awash in healthy hair tips, myths and misconceptions.

Let’s discuss a few.

Myth #1: If you want shiny hair rinse with cold water.

Truth: Cold water rinsing doesn’t make hair shinier. Sure some may suggest this as one of the healthy hair tips. But as long as you avoid extremely hot water, which is damaging, to wash your hair, it really does not matter how cold the rinse water is.

Myth #2: It’s smart to change hair shampoo regularly.

hair healthy

Truth: This is makes me laugh. Your hair is unable to remember or recognize what shampoo was used on it last. It’s basically just dead cells. So how’s it gonna know what kind of shampoo you’re using? But your hair will respond to shampoos formulated to its specific hair type. So get the right shampoo for your hair type rather than worrying about which one to use next.

Myth #3: Shampoo twice if you want really clean hair.

Truth: Actually over use of shampoos can be damaging to your hair. Unless your hair is extremely oily shampooing once should suffice.

Myth #4: If you want your hair to grow faster get it trimmed more often.

how to grow hair faster

Truth: Everyone’s hair grows at its own rate. How fast it grows certainly is not dependent on how often you trim it. All trimming it does is to make your hair look neater as it gets rid of the split ends. Still many women trim their hair regularly because they believe hair grows faster that way.

Myth #5: Brushing your hair 100 times a day is wise.

Truth: This is a really famous myth that’s been repeated from mother to daughter for decades now. You will see it mentioned in hair care books too. Yet you never want to brush your hair except to style it. Over brushing like this tends to weaken and damage your hair.

Myth #6: A stress filled life leads directly to hair loss.

hairloss helpTruth be told we’re losing hair daily. Regardless of whether we are stressed out or not. On an average between 40 to 130 hairs fall out every day. Sure you might lose a few more if you’re super stressed. But unless you are pulling your hair out by the roots, it will grow back!

Myth #7: A good stylist can generally repair your split ends.

Truth: Cutting away the splits is the only treatment that works. Alas there is no way to repair a split end.

So there you have it. Seven healthy hair tips. Yours for the taking.

Since everybody has different types of hair so it is obvious that the hair care treatment will also differ. The basic hair care treatment involves shampooing, conditioning and combing so let us discuss on the different types shampoo that are available in the market.
Before purchasing any shampoo it is important that you recognize first the condition and type of your hair and buy the shampoo accordingly. Simply buying any of the shampoo available in the market because it is expensive or because it is of branded company will not help you much and leave you frustrated.

Among the different types of hair let us begin with ‘Normal Hair’ that are easily manageable that does not need frequent shampooing. Instead, you can rinse your hair if you use some heavy hair cosmetics such as hair spray, wax, mousse or you have a lot of out door activities that cause your hair gets in touch with pollution and sunburn. Too much shampooing might damage this type of hair.

If your hair is characterized with dryness, roughness and dullness then your hair can be sorted under ‘Dry’ type. This type of hair requires special attention. Shampoo that contains natural materials such as honey, olive oil, chamomile, almond oil, and other essential oil must be purchased. Drop of moisture level causes dryness in hair so shampoo with moisturizer is recommended. Separate use of conditioner is also recommended for dry and damaged hair to get better result. It is also suggested to avoid frequent using of blow dryer with excessive heat because it will further dry your hair. And even if you use hair styling tools then select a low heat setting. CHI hair styling will be the best option that will enable you to control the temperature.

Unless you treat yourself to an olive oil hair treatment. In these economic days you do not need to buy something if it is already in your kitchen cabinet.

Homemade Hair Treatments

‘Greasy Hair’ that is characterized with greasy head skin, bad smell, sticky, peeled off head skin, etc should be rinsed as frequently as three times a week with extra mild shampoo. Beside this cotton soak into lemon water should be applied after bathing followed with scrubbing. Then pause for few minutes and clean it. This will help to decrease the grease rate on the head skin. Since greasy hair also gets easily drenched so it is suggested not to use 2 in 1 shampoo that will cause your hair to drench easily. It is also reminded that apply conditioner with extra precaution so that it does not touch the hair follicle and the head skin. ‘Dandruff’is one of the common and biggest hair problem that is characterize with small pieces of dead skin from scalp which causes itching when in excess. Shampoo containing anti-dandruff active agent like sulfide, zinc phyrithione, cetoconazole, or sulfur to rinse all pieces of peeled skin followed by conditioner.

Special shampoo should be chosen for dyed hair that aims at protecting the color from being fade away and to keep intact the moisture level of your hair. After shampooing wash your hair with warm water to protect the cuticle and apply the special conditioner for dyed hair. Care should be taken that you do not switch off frequently to another shampoo instead maintain consistency but you can change to other suitable shampoo only if your hair requires a change otherwise it is not at all necessary.

Tips to help your hair grow to its maximum length.

If you are looking for ways to grow longer, stronger hair or  stop hair loss  you’ve come to the right place. Forget expensive treatments, there are 5 easy things you can do to improve your hair’s health that won’t cost you a fortune.

how to make your hair grow long

One: Take Vitamins

When your mother told you to take your vitamins, she knew what she was talking about. Though genetics play a great part in your ability to grow and maintain a healthy head of hair, taking vitamins and eating a good, nutritionally balanced diet play an essential part in the hair growth process.

vitamins for the hair

What types of vitamins should I take?

There are a multitude of vitamins that can  contribute to healthy hair  and longer hair. You should start your regimen with those most specifically linked to stronger, longer hair.

Biotin

The body needs Biotin to grow cells and maintain blood sugar levels. Along with growing hair, it also grows and strengthens your nails so, taking it has an added bonus for your overall appearance. You should take somewhere between 150 – 300 mcg daily to produce the results you want.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is one of the most essential vitamins to the hair growth process. Aside from this, it fights free radicals which damage cells. Vitamin A, however, should not be overused. Overuse can do more harm to hair than good so, keep it to a daily maximum of 5,000 IU.

Vitamin B12

The great thing about B12 is that you’re probably already getting your fill of this, no supplements needed. B12 is found in chicken, eggs, and meat. Yum, yum. Though you’re probably already getting a good amount of this in your favorite dishes, the recommended amount is 2 mg.

Vitamin C

Down a glass of Florida gold and make your hair shine. Citrus fruits are excellent for the hair as exemplified by the rash of hair products with citrus fruit ingredients. Taking 60 mg of Vitamin C daily can improve hair health and help you fight colds all at the same time!

Two: Stimulate Your Scalp
massage scalpDespite old wives’ tales to the contrary, brushing the hair from root to tip is not a good idea and can actually be counterproductive to what you’re trying to accomplish. The scalp, on the other hand, needs a little extra TLC (tender lovin’ care for the acronym-challenged).

Separating your hair into sections and moving a brush across in a downward motion across your scalp will be enough to bring your scalp back to life and removes debris collected in your hair follicles. This should be done every other night. Some experts suggest tapping the scalp with a brush type like a boar’s bristle to stimulate the scalp.

Third: Oil Your Scalp

For those with ethnic hair, Olive oil is key to maintaining a healthy scalp.

Even if you don’t have an ethnic hair texture, the hair must have moisture to prevent damage and breakage, but for ethnic hair, which is prone to brittleness, this step is absolutely MANDATORY.

Fourth: Trim Your Ends

We have all seen them, the girls with uneven hair. Some is long, some is short and damaged. Or, the ones with long hair but it’s frizzy and unmanageable. Please don’t be one of these girls.

If you are or to keep from becoming one, get your split ends cut immediately. It is a good habit to get your ends trimmed monthly to prevent split ends and keeping existing split ends from doing major damage to the rest of your hair. When my hair was damaged, the first thing I did was cut my hair into a short bob to even it out and get rid of the damaged ends.

Fifth: Condition Your Hair

When hair gets dry it breaks. That is a fact. The more alcohol-based products you use and the more heat styling you do, the less moisture is retained in the hair. It becomes brittle and damaged and that leads to breakage. If you can’t do without those heat styling products and the only product that tames your hair has alcohol content, the best way to protect your hair with regular use of a conditioner.

Oily hair, dry hair, dandruff, split ends, and other hair problems  are all signs of improper hair care. Learn what you can do to improve the health and look of your hair.

Having been around the beauty industry for pretty much my whole life, I have been educated over and over again on hair structure and hair products.

Although it is all very fascinating to me, and I truly appreciate having the knowledge, I now realize just how complicated many large companies have made this industry.

They use a lot of big words and even bigger chemicals to compete against other large companies. This is more of a marketing strategy, to make the products sound more complex and professional.

The strategy is to sound like a chemist to the clients, and look as though they are the best and most knowledgeable. The consumer then thinks, "these guys sure sound like they know what they are talking about, so they must be the best!" Of course, after discovering the harm that these products cause due to their high quantities of SLS Products in them, I realize now that I don’t have to think about "active ingredients", only natural surfactants and humectants.

You really don’t need all that technical mumbo jumbo in order to understand what makes your hair healthy.

Here’s what you do need to know.

scalp growth

Hair has 3 very important parts. There are many more, but these are the ones that I think are most important for you, the consumer, to know about. I’ll start with the most important part, the follicle.

Pull out a strand of hair and look at it closely. The end that came from the scalp has a little bulb on it.

That’s the follicle. It’s like the feeding tube for the hair itself. It needs blood circulation to deliver nutrients.

A lot of male baldness is caused by a loss of circulation to the scalp. I have personally seen new hair growth start to appear on a balding head through massaging the scalp. It also needs the nutrients from your body in order to grow healthy hair.

This is why people with poor diets have thinning, dull hair, and why people with eating disorders lose theirs.

The next part is the Cortex layer. This one you can’t see (you’re in trouble if you can). This is the inner part of the hair that gives it strength. It’s made up of every thing good or bad in your body, and can actually show us good or bad health, because it has been produced by the follicle.

This is why I am always stressing to my clients that they should never strip the hair with a shampoo and cream rinse that contains harsh chemicals. It needs it’s natural oils and it’s natural moisture in order to maintain elasticity. These items also give hair it’s body, it’s ability to curl, and help it to grow long. I like to think of my hair as a result of what I’ve put into my body.

hair cellsThe third part is the cuticle . This is the outer layer of the hair, and the most mistreated part of all.

It is constantly exposed to weather, pollutants, chemicals, as well as heat from blow dryers, tongs, and brushes. The list is endless what this poor part has to endure. Unfortunately, it’s also the most delicate.

When you use a shampoo that contains chemicals that strip the hair, they open the cuticle, which robs the cortex layer of it’s nutrients. The more the cuticle gets opened, the harder it is to shut it down.

This results in more tangles, which then means more product is needed to eliminate those tangles, which means the more clogged it gets. Over time, the cuticle becomes weak, and can no longer protect the cortex. Then, the cortex weakens because it can no longer hold onto it’s strength qualities, and that’s when it breaks.

Now, take that hair you pulled out earlier and hold it between your thumb and fore finger. Then, with your other hand, slide your finger from the follicle end down the closed cuticle. Now, go in the other direction.

That’s the roughness of an open cuticle, Then, hold it at both ends and gently pull it, as if you are stretching a rubber band. If you have healthy hair, you will actually see it stretch, because it has maintained a healthy balance of oils and moisture.

The more damage, the less it will stretch. Severely damaged hair will just snap with no stretch at all, and that is why hair breaks off.

Once you reach that point, there is no way to repair the damage. You can’t repair a cuticle that is not there, no matter what . This is why the shampoo and cream rinse that you use is so important. If you’re not stripping the hair in the first place, you won’t have the need to spend hundreds of dollars trying to replace and repair it. Your hair has a natural balance, and it only makes sense to use a naturally balanced product to enhance it.
